Clarification:

Content/editorial/journalism, along with end-user functionality, is still incredibly crucial to the success of an online initiative.

Yet, due to the new Internet rules of the road, we are no longer able to rely solely on the concept of "build something 'cool' and drive traffic first, then the advertisers will come knocking".

Advertisers have an unlimited amount of options when it comes to online marketing. Thus, online journalists will have to, at the very least, develop a basic understanding of online sales, revenue & business models.

I'm not a journalist but an 'active citizen'. However this post and the practical comment "sales and profit first, followed by operations, then editorial" has led me to reconsider - but not discount - my belief that "content is key" and everything can be constructed afterwards....

We have a hyperlocal web site in our community that is really useful, HobNob Murfreesboro. I have watched them grow over the last year and they seem to be everywhere.

I think the best thing they do is the weekly newsletter that they send out on Monday. I have heard that the owner runs the entire operation from a local coffee shop!
