Don’t Be Misquoted – Start a Hyperlocal Blog

I know you have heard this before and it won’t be the last time either but it always comes down to this. I know, because I have had this happen to me.
I stepped forward to share my story with a news or media outlet… and it turned out exactly opposite of how I intended.
I was either misquoted or placed out of context and essentially should have never even participated to begin with.
This is all to typical an experience to hear. In fact if it’s happened to you tell me about it below in the comments. The story often goes like this: ” Hey, that’s not what I said,” or “Wait a minute that’s not what I meant.”
If I had a penny for every individual a major media outlet who has shamed or publicly disgraced. Good people, people who were being honest and truthful. Individuals who had absolutely no recourse, but instead were forced to live with the consequences of the false media representation.
I would probably be able to buy a small island in the Caribbean.
Not only this but if you add in all the people who on the other side of the story, who actually believed what was reported, this would incur even more damages. It happens every day all across America and around the world.
Journalism in it’s current form is existing under the context of an illusion that it can accurately represent an individuals point of view, almost better than the actual individual itself. In fact it gets so spectacular that it actually sells. We call this journalism. It’s exciting and profitable.
This is a real and serious issue.
When we wake up and realize that the news and information services were not created to deliver your message, instead They were created to sell. This is not about choice. This is about censorship and control.
Let’s get this straight:
Mass Media is Not Good and it is not here to share your message with the world. Mass media is about business as usual and it’s here to make money.
Now maybe I hurt your feelings if you are a journalist working hard to report honestly and bring news to the people. But I am not questioning your integrity. I am questioning the systems and protocol for how news is shared.
This is why hyperlocal blogging is so vital.
Think about it this way. Why in the world should mass media have the right to tell an individuals story with out their direct consent or participation. Shouldn’t people be able to tell their own story?
Many of us already do, we use our own voices and share our own thoughts. By Hyperlocal blogging and participating in the social media revolution we are changing ways in which the future is and will be created.
Citizen journalism is of vital importance and hyperlocal blogging is a great way for you to share your voice and point of view with the world.
Take charge and ownership of your own story, of your own articulation.
If a mass media outlet want’s to do an interview with you post it on your website. Then require that they print it verbatim or its no deal.
Get it in writing and make firm agreements and compensation, after all they are making money on you.
Make your disclosure public so that everyone can hear what you have to say and how you have to say it.

Thank you very much for that magnificent article
I’m curious as to what exactly happened to you.
Thanks for your comment on my blog.
Mainstream media has always been a huge pet peeve of mine.
We think its like the post office that the purpose of it is to deliver media.
Instead as I write in my blog it is really a business created to sell a point of view.
My experiences are pretty similar to many, you say one thing they print another.
Not a dependable long term solution for media as society evolves.
A very good pov on the ‘hyperlocal’ trend. Local news are more specific and accurate than mass media.
