So your want to setup and run your own hyperlocal website. Have you identified your audience and do you have an expertise which you can present as value to your readers. Do you understand their needs and know how to find them? Are there competitors and if so what’s gonna give you the edge. The hyperlocal pre launch is a critical phase of planning out not only what your going to do but how your going to succeed at what you do.
System Setup & Design – Part Two
What about platform, domain names and web hosting? Are you knowledgeable of WordPress or Joomla, or are you thinking of hiring help online? What about your online presentation. Do you have a professional online identity. How will you pull it all together so that your online audience “Gets Your Message”.
Content Creation & Aggregation – Part Three
What about your websites content. Are you going to be the sole contributor or will you hire or work with other contributors to share unique content and stories. What about comments, who will moderate them or will you disable these. What about news aggregation, do you have an rss feed or ability to pull in outside web feeds from other local sites? What about a weather ticker? Can you put your finger on the number one keyword your audience is looking for?
Management & Routines – Part Four
Do you have a plan for posting content, a daily routine and long term plan for how you will keep your site alive and engaged. Have you established a content creation calendar or editors task list? Do you have a writers list or interview template?
Hyperlocal Monetization – Part Five
And finally.. the ever illusive key to building a sustainable hyperlocal website, MONEY!

Good Stuff Shields. Looking forward to this series!!
Planning is always better than not planning! But I think it is important to emphasise that Hyperlocal sites are not the preserve of ‘professionals’ but can be started by enthusiastic individuals and communities.
If nothing else exists in the area that you can get involved with and a need has been spotted – then go for it and learn on the job!
